Small and Micro Enterprises Research Proposal Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Small and Micro Enterprises - Research Proposal Example The state is also the third largest exporter for software parts in a country that is now known as the software hub of the world. Given these accomplishments, despite the absence of big industry names from the overall economic scene of the state the study of the entrepreneurial ability of the small and medium enterprises and their owners would provide a development model that has been tested and has proved its mettle. Entrepreneurial ability and a culture of efficiency and government support to the SME mechanism can prove to be a potent mixture where the economic success of a state set up is concerned. With this hypothesis we present the research proposal. The greatest challenge will be the fact that the research is based on human nature and feedback available from the entrepreneurs and businessmen in the state. There will automatically be issues of authenticity because people in surveys more often that npot state what the think would be the 'correct answer'. The research keeping this in mind will utilize a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods.

Discuss the motives underlining Mergers & Acquisition and compare the Essay

Discuss the motives underlining Mergers & Acquisition and compare the outcomes of the different methodologies used to analyse M& - Essay Example Considering this aspect, the paper discusses the motives underlying M&A in different organisations. The objective of the article is to explore as to why organisations opt for executing M&A strategy. Furthermore, the paper also compares about the outcomes of different methodologies that are used in analysing the impact of M&A. Table of Contents Abstract 2 Literature Review 4 Overview of Merger & Acquisition 4 Nature of Merger & Acquisition 4 Motives Underlying M&A 5 Comparative Analysis of M&A 10 References 13 Literature Review Overview of Merger & Acquisition Merger & acquisition (M&A) which is also acknowledged as takeover is regarded to be an important strategy that use by various organisations in recent days in order to accomplish higher economies of scale. According to Lahovnik (2000), M&A is considered as one of the most prevalent approaches of organisations in today’s global businesses. The incorporation of local market into international economy, improvement of financia l market along with liberalisation and deregulation procedure strongly supports the approach of M&A. Schoenberg (2009) stated that M&A provides a common way for organisations in terms of accomplishing quick growth and rapid market entry. ... Such activities are usually voluntary in nature and often lead towards a new corporate identity. Merger can be aggressive or friendly in nature and in this procedure, the acquirer exercise full control on the acquired organisation. Gaughan (2007) described merger as grouping of two or more than two organisations where only a single organisation can sustain. Sudarsanam (2003) stated that M&A is implemented interchangeably. He defined that merger is a procedure where organisations share their resources in order to accomplish mutual objectives, but the shareholders still retain their ownership in the newly formed organisation. On the basis of the study conducted by Picot (2002), M&A indicates number of different transactions ranging from acquiring as well as selling of undertakings, agreements, collaboration and joint ventures to the establishment of organisations or corporate progression that certify individuality of dealings, transformation in legal form, preliminary public offering a nd reorganisation. Jagersma (2005) stated that merger is the arrangement of two or in excess of two organisations in establishment of a new entity or creation of a holding company. On the other hand, acquisition is the buying of shares and assets of other organisation in order to accomplish administrative powers. Motives Underlying M&A Carline & et. al., (2009) has described three motives for organisations to engage in M&A that comprise cooperation motive, hubris motive and intervention motive. Every motive has its own inference in relation to the advantages of organisations adopting as well as implementing M&A. Lemnsic & Maslennikova (2008)

Students in sports Essay Example for Free

Students in sports Essay Did you know that more than 30 million kids participate in an organized sport in the United States? Sports participation is beneficial to students in many ways (sportsandrecreationalactivityinjury. NationalSafeKidsCampaign. 31 October. 2012). It can improve physical fitness, coordination, self-discipline and teamwork, as well as promote a sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment. But on the other hand can also have very big problems with the student’s grades and time. Having students play in sports can help them be better in school and academically. Students are more likely to have a better mental health if they are playing in sports because being physical actually decrease depression, decrease your anxiety, decrease your self-perception, and improves your confidence. Let’s say that a 6 year old child is playing soccer for the schools team but she is overweight being in a sport will actually help her feel better about herself because as she grows her body will change and will become a more fit, strong and healthier inside. If the child feels better about them self’s mentally it will actually open their minds for more important things rather than thinking about how they look (DoChildrenInvolvedINSportsBetterMentalHealth. RachelNelson. 2012. Demand Media, Inc. LIVESTRONG. COM. 5 November. 2012). Science Daily actually states that playing a sport as a young child with improves language skills because you will have to discuss what has to be done and what has happened (ScienceDaily. Editor Staff. 1995-2012. ScienceDailyLLC. 5 November. 2012). A recent study conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) investigated the link between physical activity in children and academic performance in school. Initially, researchers predicted that kids who took physical education (PE) during the school day would do better academically, since it helps reduce boredom and helps kids stay focused(activekidsdobetterinschool. NicoleNicholas,FitnessIntructor, healtheducator. 2012. SparkPeople,Inc. 7 November. 2012). Did you know that brain injury is the leading cause of sports-and recreation-related death? Injuries associated with participation in sports and recreational activities account for 21 percent of all traumatic brain injuries among children in the United States (NationalSAFEKIDS Campaigm2012). Students playing in sports can actually have a done side in the mental process they could be hit the skill with can lead to a brain injury. For example Steve Young, star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, is knocked to the ground during a football game. In 2000, after 13 years with the team, Young announced his retirement due to the serious of the head injury he sustained on the field. Having a brain injury can affect you in many ways; it can affect your sense of taste or smell, slow or slurred speech, minor or several headaches, balance problems and tiredness. Having a fracture to the head can be very bad for the way the brain works with our bodies. According to a new study by Dr. Keith Zullig and Rebecca White from West Virginia University in the US shows that middle-school teenagers who are physically active and play on sports teams are more satisfied with their life and feel healthier (ScienceNews. 2010. ScienceDaily. 7November. 2012). In an official recent survey, doctors found 17 per cent of boys and 16 per cent of girls between 12 and 15 are classed as either overweight or obese(fitnessforchildrenandyoungpeople. 2012. BBC. Health. 7November. 2012). Children are supposed to have at least an hour of some type of excuses a day. Not having that time to be doing something physically active may have a really negative income with your health for example it may cause you to be proem to catching a lot of different types of diseases. A child that is being physical in sport has a fewer change of getting chronic health problems than a child that are inactive later in life. Being in a sport can actually benefit you by helping your body built your bone structure. The exercising will help with peak bones mass between ages 20 and 30, exercising the muscles that pull on and strengthen bone is critical during this period because it will help the child reach their full growth potential(BoneBuilders. 2006. TheUniversityOfArizona. 7November. 2012). More than 10,000 people receive treatment in the nation’s emergency departments (ED) each day for injuries sustained in SRE activities. At least one of every five ED visits for an injury results from participation in sports or recreation. In 1999, Americans made an estimated 1. 5 million ED visits for injuries sustained while playing basketball, baseball, softball, football, or soccer. Approximately 715,000 sports and recreation injuries occur each year in school settings alone. Injuries are also a leading reason people stop participating in potentially beneficial physical activity (PublicHealthBurden. 2006. CDCInjuryCenter. 7November. 2012). With this said being in a sport can also not be good physically to your body but being in a sport can actually increase the change of the athlete start using steroids to increase their physical strength. And steroid use has trickled down to younger athletes too, who face fierce pressure to be stronger and faster, and to make it to college and professional leagues. Some research has shown that 5% of teen boys and 2. 5% of teen girls have used some form of anabolic steroids. Studies show that the developing kids using steroids are going to be harmed by this illegal drug down the road in their lifes(Steroids. 1995-2012. TheNemoursFundation. 7November. 2012). For example an athlete that used steroids is Shawne he was drafted in the first round (12th Overall) in the 2005 NFL draft out of the University of Maryland. He quickly made himself known as one on the quickest and dominant outside linebackers in the game. Merriman has 39. 5 career sacks in his first 43 NFL games. He has 189 tackles, was the 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year, and has been selected to 3 Pro Bowls. On October 22, 2006 Merriman was given a 4 game suspension by the NFL for testing positive for an anabolic steroid. I guess we know what helped make Shawne one of the most feared players today. His suspension has led to the NFL rule that no player that has tested positive for steroids can be selected to the Pro Bowl or given any performance awards in the year they test positive. Merriman makes $11. 5 million dollars a year playing football(Top10SportsFiguresWhoseCareersAreTarnishedbySteroids. BryanJohnson. TopTenz. net. 7November. 2012). Have you ever asked yourself what student’s gains from being in sports discipline wise? Well sports do teach students right from wrong, hard work, how to set goals, motivation and how to achieve what you want. A sports coach can have a powerful influence on a childs life, potentially more than parents and teachers, according to Trulsons study. During practice, a coach is in a position to demonstrate the value of continued focus, delayed gratification and vigorous effort even when its hard. In competition, the student can see in real time the positive results of following coachs instructions. In his book The Art of Empowering Children, coach and teacher John Graybeal notes that this effect is even stronger if the coach directly discusses discipline in addition to the object lesson from the sport.

A Review Of The Novel Alias Grace English Literature Essay

A Review Of The Novel Alias Grace English Literature Essay Grace Marks is one of the two accused for the murders of her employer, Mr. Kinnear and his housewife, Nancy. She was sentenced to life imprisonment. Initially she claims that she does not remember what happened at the scene of the crime. Grace is introverted and carefully chooses what she says so that she does not reveal much information about herself. After Dr. Jordan comes, she opens up a little and tells him her tough childhood and what she remembers about the murders. By the end of the novel, Grace is pardoned, marries her lover, Jamie Dr. Simon Jordan is the physician that is to analyze Grace. He is interested in her circumstances and wants to use what he knows about psychology to pry as much information from her as possible so that it can be determined whether or not she really is suffering from amnesia. After entering in a relationship with Mrs. Humphrey, his landlady, and the results of Graces hypnotism, Dr. Jordan becomes disillusioned. He is unable to come to a conclusion and in the end just returns to Europe. Mary Whitney is a girl about Graces age who also worked for Mrs. Parkinson. Mary is more experienced with worldly matters and thus becomes sort of like a mentor to Grace. It is through Mary that Grace is able to find family. They are like sisters and become close to each other. She has an affair with Mr. George that ends up in a pregnancy and a failed abortion that takes away her life. Grace seems to care more for Mary than her own mother because when her mom died, she thought twice about using the sheet to cover her. On the other hand, Grace uses her money to provide the best possible funeral for her friend. Supposedly, the spirit of Mary resides in Grace and will come out during hypnotism. Nancy Montgomery is the housemaid of Mr. Thomas Kinnear. When she is first introduced, she is looking for extra help. She is not as welcoming or friendly as Graces last employer, Mrs. Parkinson. She feels as though she is superior to Grace. Nancy has an affair with Kinnear and gets jealous of Kinnear when he starts lusting for Grace. She is later found in the cellar, strangled and her throat cut. 4. Conflicts: One major conflict in the novel is determining Graces innocence and also her identity. Much of the book is concerned about Grace giving the readers background information about herself and her version of what happened during the time of the murders The conflict never gets resolved because Dr. Jordan never comes to a conclusion and just abandons his all of his findings. He does not know what to think after he witnesses the spirit of Mary Whitney possess Graces body. Atwood gives you all of many small pieces and it is up to readers to put everything together and then decide whether or not Grace is guilty or not 5. Opening chapter or scene: Alias Grace opens with a dream about Nancy, a dream that also occurs again later on in the novel. The year is 1851 and Grace is twenty-four years old. She has been in prison ever since she was sixteen. She tries to be the model prisoner even though life in the penitentiary is described as tough. She tells this dream to Dr. Jordan when they arrive at the part of the story. In the next section is a little poem that gives a quick but somewhat inaccurate summary of what has already happened before the novel started. The opening gives some background information about Graces life and also foreshadows many events. 6. Plot: Grace has been kept at the Kingston Penitentiary when Dr. Jordan comes and performs his project with Grace, the inciting incident After Graces initial reluctance to participate with Dr. Jordan ends, the rising action occurs when Grace relates her past to him. She is an immigrant from Ireland to Canada and suffers from a dysfunctional and poverty-stricken family. Life was hard for her because her father was worthless. She was able to find a job as a housekeeper. While working, she befriends Mary Whitney. She is traumatized when Mary dies because of an unsuccessful abortion and quits her job. She takes up another job with Nancy Montgomery, who works at the Kinnear estate She also meets James McDermott, another worker under Mr. Kinnear. Nancy and Mr. Kinnear seem to have a relationship together but now Kinnear is paying more attention to Grace. James thinks that Nancy and Kinnear should be killed. Grace then tells Dr. Jordan that James kills them both and then faints when James threatens her. When she awakens, James says that she must keep her part of the deal which implied that she was to go to bed with him. Grace tries to put him off and persuades him to escape to Toronto but they soon get captured. In the climax, Dr. Dupont hypnotizes Graces but instead a spirit comes out saying that she is not Grace but Mary Whitney. When the trance is broken, Grace comes back but does not remember what happened during the hypnosis. 7. Conclusion: In the novels falling action and conclusion, a disoriented and confused Dr. Jordan ceases his investigations and returns back to Europe Grace is pardoned and released from the penitentiary at the age of forty-five. She ends up marrying her childhood lover, Jaime Walsh and soon gets pregnant. The novel ends with a passage about how Grace will quilt the Tree of Paradise. She will interweave Marys petticoat, her prison nightdress, and Nancys dress altogether. The ending was only somewhat appropriate because it did not really feel as if he flowed with the rest of the story, that it did not belong there. It just seems attached on. 8. Themes: One theme of the novel is gender and feminism in the nineteenth century. Women back then were supposed to act a certain way. They were to be submissive and modest with the men dominating. Women were also thought to be more petite and moral. This may be a reason why James was executed and why Grace was only sent to prison. Another theme of the novel is that of sexuality. This theme seems to be a big driving force in the story. Mary Whitney gets involved in a sexual affair that has big repercussions. While in prison Grace must deal with the verbal abuse and sexual advances of the guards. Grace is accused of having a sexual encounter with Jamie in the orchard. Also when Mrs. Humphreys husband leaves her, she turns to a sexual relationship with Dr. Jordan for comfort. Dr. Jordan, on the other hand has fantasies of Miss Lydia and even Grace. Both Mr. Kinnear and James lust after Grace. Kinnear and Nancy have an affair too. Either way, sexuality plays an important role in the novel. 9. Symbols/Archetypes: One big symbol is that of the quilt. There is both a physical quilt, the one that Grace is working on, and a mental quilt. Each time Dr. Jordan examines Grace, it seems if as though another piece of Graces life and identity are sewed onto a quilt. All of the little intricate bits and memories are stitched together make up the whole quilt and there are also different ways to look at and interpret quilts. In addition, the title of each chapter is a name of a real quilting design. Another symbol may be that apples. They could symbolize the truth and knowledge. It could also represent the apple in the Garden of Eden. Grace could symbolize Eve, who was manipulated by something evil and then was punished for it. 10. Parallel events/parallel works: Alias Grace is similar to the story of the Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gillman. Both works of literature were about psychiatric care. Women were the protagonist in both stories. Also both women were isolated from other people, one in an asylum, another in a lonely room. The dream that Grace describes in the opening chapter makes another appearance in the middle of the novel. In it, Grace sees Nancy with blood all over her face. Alias Grace is the retelling of the real story of Grace Marks. It is a historical fiction novel though, so some aspects such as the character of Dr. Simon Jordan are made up. 11. Style: Atwood rarely uses quotations in this novel. This makes the text more confusing as to who is talking and thinking which thoughts. This does emphasize the ambiguity of Graces life and her account of the murders In addition to the lack of punctuation, Grace also uses the word could very often. This makes it seems like she is making up some of the details, that what she says is conditional The story is presented from the point of view of Graces At the beginning of each chapter, Atwood uses a real historical article and/or a quote that describes something about Grace to introduce the next section. To highlight the quilt theme, Atwood also names each chapter after a genuine quilting pattern and even provides a small picture of the design. 12. Significant lines: I would rather be a murderess than a murderer, if those are the only choices (23) showing feminist attitudes like passing through the gates of Hell and into Paradise (447) when she left the penitentiary and went off into the real world and that is the same with all quilts, you can see them two different ways, by looking at the dark pieces, or else the light (162) there are always more than one way to look at things in life and everything has a dark and light side Murderess is a strong word to have attached to you (27) she has a label attached to her and it makes her think a certain way And so we will all be together (460) the last line of the novel, Grace will all of the remnants of her past onto one quilt so that she can look at it and move on

Friedrich Nietzsche Essay example -- essays research papers

Friedrich Nietzsche Some call Friedrich Nietzsche the father of the Nazi party. Was Nietzsche's ideas twisted and warped by a needy country? Nietzsche himself despised the middle and lower class people. Was it Nietzsche's Will to Power theory that spawned one of the greatest patriotic movements of the twentieth century? These are some of the questions I had when first researching Friedrich Nietzsche for the following paper. Friedrich Nietzsche, at one time called "the arch enemy of Christianity"(Bentley, p.82), was born into a line of Protestant Clergyman on October 15, 1844. During Nietzsche's early years, he gave no indication that he would not follow in his families' clergy tradition. As a boy, Nietzsche considered himself a devout Lutheran. At age six(two years after his father passed away)Nietzsche, his mother and sister moved to the small town of Naumburg. When Nietzsche was twelve he wrote â€Å"I saw God in all his glory†(Bentley, p.82). Later his description of his own mental state was one of Gottergebenheit; â€Å" surrender to God†(Bentley, p.82). At a very early age Nietzsche had already displayed an aptitude for highly intellectual prowess. At fourteen, Nietzsche left his home of Naumburg and went to an exclusive boarding school at the nearby Schulpforta Academy. The school was famous for its grandeur of alumni that included â€Å"Klopstock and Fichte†(Brett-Evans, p.76). â€Å"It was here that Nietzsche received the thorough education in Greek and Latin that set him upon the road to classical philology.†(Brett-Evans, p. 76) On many occasions Nietzsche's zeal to prove himself at the Pforta school spurned legendary tales. One certain tale is when Nietzsche â€Å"could not bear to hear of the courage of Mucius Scaevol, who did not flinch when his hand was burnt off, without seizing a box of matches and firing them against his own hand.†(Bentley, p.84) At the age of twenty, Nietzsche left to attend Bonn University. By this time Nietzsche had come to think of himself as an â€Å"aristocrat whose great virtues are fearlessness and willingness to assume leadership.†(Bentley, p.85) Ironically, Nietzsche planned to study theology(to please his mother). At this time Nietzsche no longer believed in Christianity, because â€Å"with maturity he lost his heavenly father†(Bentley, p.86). In 1868 Nietzsche was a student in Leipzig. This is when he met Cosima and Richard Wagner. The... ...world domination is only possible by ignoring the greater part of what he wrote.†(Brett-Evans, p.81) Matter-of-factly, Nietzsche sternly despised anti-Semites. At certain times, there was not a harsher critic of racist German nationlism. But some questions arise out of these statements. What of the comments Nietzsche made concerning the â€Å"will-to-power† theory, the constant reference to the â€Å"superman†, and his sometimes vigorous patriotism? One of the most significant contributions Nietzsche made was in the area of psychology not philosophy. One of the â€Å"most significant conclusions he came to in this field was that traditional morality consists of different expressions for the same thing, that "good" actions and "bad" actions can ultimately derive from the same motive.†(Brett-Evans, p.80) In truth I believe that Friedrich Nietzsche was a visionary who was never able to replace his earthly Father or his heavenly Father. This led to his strange emotional relationship with women. His only friends were those women who he had failed relationships with and men who he quarreled with. In the end, Nietzsche died of syphilis that was allegedly contracted while in college.

Effects Of Intolerance In Society Essay -- essays research papers

In society, many people tend to reject those who are different. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents a number of situations that reveal the effects of intolerance on other people’s lives. The characters in the novel who were treated with a lack of intolerance were Boo Radley, Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson. By observing the effects of intolerance on people’s lives, the children gain sympathy, respect and understanding for its victims. The children gain sympathy for Boo Radley when they observe how others reject him. Ever since his teenage years, Boo had been a prisoner in his own home because his father kept him locked up as a form of punishment. As a result of his isolationism, Boo gained the reputation of Maycomb’s mysterious man. Town folk have created rumours about Boo for a source of gossip. Miss Stephanie, known as the â€Å"neighbourhood scold†, told the children that â€Å"Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities† (Lee 11). Jem Finch was another culprit who succeeded in spreading rumours about Boo Radley. The young and mischievous Jem told Dill that â€Å"[Boo] dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch† (13). It appeared that the townspeople were blinded by their own stupidity by harassing the helpless Boo Radley. Boo was never given a chance to prove his humanity to the town. Although they assisted in tormenting Boo at first, the children ended up feeling sympathetic toward him. ...

Characters in Hamlet and Young Hamlet

The theme of revenge is a primary source of discord among the characters in Hamlet. Vengeance affects each person who is exacting it and those present around them. In particular, Hamlet, Laertes, and Claudius’s retribution leads to their demise. William Shakespeare's Hamlet can be defined as a revenge tragedy. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the reader sees a noble, heroic central character that is destroyed because a defect in his character either causes him to involve himself in circumstances which overpower him, or make him incapable of dealing with a destructive situation caused by another character or by circumstances. The play ends with the death of the central character. But before he dies, he achieves insights which make him a more perceptive human being than he was when the play began. This central character, Hamlet, shows his love directly and indirectly to the reader. Hamlet is noble in birth and person, a prince of extraordinary intelligence: and, as the action of the play proves, he is heroic. His defect (indecision, excessive imagination, irrationality, madness, etc. ) prevent him from seizing control of the world Claudius has created. His death closes the play, but only after he experiences and expresses illuminations about human life and death. After Hamlet's Father died, it cast an unwanted and heavy cloud upon Hamlet's soul. Throughout the play Hamlet learns that his Father's death was no mistake, but it was Hamlet's Uncle's plan to murder him. This, of course, throws a much larger burden on Hamlet's hands and the thirty year old prince seeks revenge continuously. Hamlet learned from the ghost of his Father about the betrayal Claudius had planned. The ghost of his Father tells him to â€Å"Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder,† Act 1, Scene 3; Line 74]. He also directs Hamlet away from killing his Mother. Revenge causes the characters in Hamlet to act blindly through anger and emotion, rather than through reason. It is based on the principle of an eye for an eye; this action is not always the best means to an end. Fortinbras, Laertes, and Hamlet were all looking to avenge the deaths of their Fathers. They all acted on emotion driven by the want of revenge concerning their Father's deaths, and this led to the downfall of two, and the rise to power of one. Since the head authority figures of the three major families were each murdered, the eldest sons of these families felt that they needed to take some kind of action to avenge their Father's deaths. This need to bring honour to their respective families was ultimately the demise of Laertes and Hamlet. Firstly, Hamlet displays anger toward his Uncle, King Claudius for marrying his Mother, Queen Gertrude, so quickly after the tragic death of his Father, King Hamlet. However, the main source of his anger begins with his feelings of despise for his Mother who chose to marry Claudius so soon after her own husbands’ death. Hamlet constantly allows this incident to brood in him and overrule every other thought and action he takes. Hamlet is convinced that the level of grief he feels for his Father’s death is the standard that everyone around him should be following. Since Gertrude does not express the same intensity of sorrow that Hamlet does, he is left furious at her and those in similar standing. ‘Tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother, Nor customary suits of solemn black, Nor windy suspiration of forced breath, No, nor the fruitful river in the eye, Nor the dejected haviour of the visage†¦Ã¢â‚¬ [Act 1, Scene 2; lines 77-86]. Secondly, King Hamlet’s ghost shares with Hamlet the cause of his death and how his murderer, Claudius, seduced Gertrude even before his death. â€Å" ’Tis given out that, sleeping in mine orchard, A serpent stung me; so the whole ear of Denmark Is by a forged process of my death,† [Act I, Scene 5; lines 35-37]. â€Å"The serpent that did sting thy father’s life Now wears his crown. [Act 1, Scene 5; lines 39-40]. â€Å"O wicked wit and gifts, that have the power So to seduce! – won to his shameful lust The will of my most seeming-virtuous queen;† [Act 1, Scene 5; lines 45-47]. Nevertheless, the ghost warns Hamlet to leave Queen Gertrude alone, to kill Claudius but not harm her. â€Å"Taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive Against thy mother aught; leave her to heaven,† [Act 1, Scene 5; lines 86-87]. In response to the ghost’s news Hamlet does not take action instantly, but instead, records the event in his journal showing a fascinating personality characteristic. Interestingly, there were three major families in the tragedy of Hamlet. These were the family of King Fortinbras, the family of Polonius, and the family of King Hamlet. Fortinbras, King of Norway, was killed by King Hamlet; slain by sword during a man-to-man battle. â€Å"†¦ Lost by his father, with all bonds of law, to our most valiant brother. â€Å"[Act 1, Scene 2; lines 24-25]. This entitled King Hamlet to the land that was possessed by Fortinbras because it was written in a sealed compact. Furthermore, Hamlet is slow to act in regards to killing Claudius but he does act rashly, without thinking. He is presented with numerous opportunities to kill Claudius but does not take those chances, which result in Hamlet being the murderer in the accidental death of Polonius. Polonius was an advisor to the King, and Father to Laertes and Ophelia. He was definitely a prying Father who did not trust his children, and at one point in the play, used his daughter to probe Hamlet. Young Hamlet killed Polonius while he was secretly listening in on a conversation between Hamlet and his Mother. â€Å"How now! A rat? Dead, for a ducat, dead! â€Å"[Act 3, Scene 4; Line 25]. King Hamlet of Denmark killed King Fortinbras, only to be killed by his brother, Claudius. â€Å"†¦ My offence is rank, it smells to high heaven; A brother's murder†¦ † Each of these events affected the sons of the deceased in the same way. Laertes discovered his Father's death, and immediately returned home. He confronted King Claudius and accused him of the murder of his Father. Claudius told Laertes that Hamlet was responsible for his Father's death. Laertes takes action, deciding to scheme and kill Hamlet in order to avenge the death of his Father. In addition, he and Claudius concoct a plot to kill Hamlet. â€Å"I will do’t: And for that purpose I’ll anoint my sword. I bought an unction of a mountebank, So mortal, that but dip a knife in it, Where it draws blood no cataplasm so rare,† [Act 4, Scene 7; Lines 140-144]. Laertes and Claudius follow with a proposal of a duel to Hamlet, which he accepts, even though he senses a foreboding. Hamlet does end up dying of wounds from the poisoned tipped sword Laertes used. â€Å"†¦ Hamlet, thou art slain†¦ the treacherous instrument is in thy, unbated and envenom'd†¦ ‘[Act 5, Scene 2; lines 306-313]. Throughout the play Hamlet proceeds to try and prove his Uncle's guilt, and then finally kills him while he himself is dying of poisoned wounds inflicted by Laertes during their duel. â€Å"The point envenomed too! Then venom, to thy work†¦ Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damned Dane, drink off this potion, is thy union here? Follow my mother. â€Å"[Act 5, Scene 2; lines 314-315, 317-319]. This left the King dead, and his Father's death avenged, with Gertrude dying shortly beforehand of the poisoned wine she drank as Claudius watched her. â€Å"No, no, the drink, the drink! O my dear Hamlet! –The drink, the drink! I am poison’d! [Act 5, Scene 2; lines 301-303]. The lack of thought used in exacting the revenge led to the deaths of Laertes, Hamlet, Claudius and Gertrude. Laertes planned with Claudius to kill Hamlet with the poisoned tipped sword, but they had not thought that the sword might be used against them. With Laertes believing the King's accusations th at Hamlet had murdered his Father, he fights Hamlet and wounds him once with the poisoned tipped sword. Hamlet proceeds to wound Laertes with the same sword, exacting his death. Hamlet had many chances to kill his Uncle, but his rage outweighed his better judgement; and he chose to wait until he assumed God could see no good in Claudius, and then strike him down into a world of eternal damnation. â€Å"Now might I do it pat, now he is praying†¦ A villain kills my father; and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven. â€Å"[Act 3, Scene 3, lines 74-98]. Hamlet waits until he can kill his Uncle while he is performing a sin but unfortunately for Hamlet, his next chance to exact revenge on Claudius is his own death. Revenge, being the driving force in the play Hamlet, is also one reason why it is a tragedy. Hamlet allows his revenge for his own justice to become his everything, consuming him. It is this rage that eventually drives him to madness and murder. Ironically, Claudius, Laertes, and Hamlet all died of the same sword. Revenge was the core strength behind three of the main characters of the play, ensuing in each of their downfalls. â€Å"If thou didst ever hold me in thy heart, Absent thee from felicity a while, And in this harsh world draw thy breath in pain, To tell my story. Act 5, Scene 2; lines 339-342]. The self interest demonstrated by Claudius, Laertes and Hamlet caused destruction in their own lives, which of course affected many lives around them. Driven by retribution, they did not consider the affect their anger would have on themselves or those they loved. â€Å"Of accidental judgments, casual slaughters, Of deaths put on by cunning and forced cause, And, in this upshot, pu rposes mistook Fall’n on the inventors’ heads: all this can I Truly deliver. † [Act 5, Scene 2; lines 375-379].
